EP 5 - The Hidden Crisis Affecting How Our Kids Learn with Darlene from Moovkids

From teaching special-needs children in Zimbabwe to running one of Finland's largest karate clubs, Darlene Koskinen has spent over 40 years discovering what kids actually need to thrive - and most parents and educators are missing it.In this powerful conversation, host Vickie Simos sits down with Darlene Koskinen - founder of MoovKids, 4th Dan Black Belt in Shukokai Karate, and former national gymnastics champion. Born and raised in Zimbabwe and now based in Espoo, Finland, Darlene brings a uniquely global perspective on why children today are struggling physically, emotionally, and academically - and what we can do about it.

In this conversation, Darlene shares:

  • Why kids today move less than any generation in history - and what it's doing to them

  • What 13 years of teaching special-needs children in Zimbabwe taught her about movement

  • What's actually happening in a child's brain when they move

  • Why the 3-to-7 window is critical (and what happens if it's missed)

  • The difference between "intentional movement" and just playing

  • Why movement-based approaches work for kids with ADHD, autism, and learning difficulties

  • Simple activities parents can do TODAY - no equipment needed

  • What Finland gets right about education that the rest of the world is missing

  • How her 4th Dan karate background shapes her teaching philosophy

  • The inner fight she sees in every child - the boxer within themWhether you're a parent of a neurodivergent child, a teacher feeling boxed in by curriculum demands, or simply someone who cares about how kids develop - this episode delivers practical insight grounded in four decades of real-world experience across three continents.

Topics Covered:

  • The science behind movement and brain development

  • Critical windows for childhood development (ages 3-7)

  • Why kids today struggle differently than previous generations
